ok i wanna get this tribe more active. it would be great if people could share what environmental/sustainable causes they are working on right now.

ALSO, what are peoples plans for the summer? any sweet travel plans or jobs that we should know about?

I know we have members who are going to be living in trees and working on farms, lets here where you will be, what you'll be doing, and how its getting you closer to your goals.....

    ok so im gonna start...

i am planning on going to oregon to take a workshop with the cob cottage company. this building technique is sustainable, cheap, and beautiful. Micheal Brown and I are cultivating ideas about starting an organic sustainable community. Cob is one of the central ideas.

i know at least a few of you have similar ideas. we should get together and collaborate.

ok lets here about your plans.....

Glad to be a part of the net Christoph...

I am looking at setting up a very ambitious Non-profit that entails (in part) pulling together a network of professionals and non-professional/concerned parties to analyze & prioritize economic environmental & cultural pattens (within the scope of the local community and/or bio-region) so as to formulate a proactive rather than reactive response to unsustainable lifestyles.

with this I hope to be able to (in no particular order):

-analyze and test the resiliency of a wide range of sustainable living models for each bio-region.

-Gauge levels of sustainable life models based on environmental impact on decentralized independence (without, of course, sacrificing the natural social fabrics of trade and exchange).

-Demonstrate the improvements in social structures through smaller, more personal, intentional groupings.

-Guild up-and-coming communities toward sustainable goals by strengthening internal cooperation and exchange while reducing external dependencies.

as a tool for leveraging these goals I want to employ a system to get more with L.E.S.S.

      Local Economic Support Systems:

-work within local communities to revive small businesses, coops & local lending services.

for this I am looking at how to develop models, display sets & indicators to show how spending more locally builds a more robust economy & can eventually reciprocate into overall economic vitality which means higher wages and a stronger capacity to provide benefits to the individual. I would also like to use these models to demonstrate how local currencies can help to supplement and provide greater security to existing economic models.

anyway that is the short version of what I have scratched together so far... I'll try to keep you all posted on how it goes.

How are cob buildings any different than adobe houses? Agreed that adobe bricks get stacked together when dry, but that doesn't mean you cannot mix your own adobe clay and create your own designs. Does a cob contain any gravel or dirt in the mixture of earth, water and straw?

I just graduated with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts, looking ahead to a Masters.
BUt also looking anxiously further ahead to starting a farm/artist coop/sustainable coop where students of sustainability and/or art can come to live and learn. I want to (going to need to) learn sustainable agriculture and study in Cuba where sustainable practices, I'm told, are well developed.
I'm interested in creating a community with a sense of place, somewhere people can settle in (like my mother who is in on this with me), but also a place with ties to people elsewhere...

My goal is to make a place and a lifestyle that can support the values of environmentailsm and sustainability, and eco-effective/friendly perspectives. I want to make it possible for others to envision a way of life that is more effective, even if it means rethinking the basics.
I dont claim to have it all figured out, or to have all the answers. Its more important to me that others find possibilities and maybe become inspiried to build thier own way.

I guess I'm idealistic. I might be envisioning my own little utopia or eden... but, hey, why not? You've got to have something to aim for, and why not aim high?

The best part will be watching this idea mature with the wisdom and influence of those involved.

If anyone has any recommendation of places to study sustainable agriculture- be it a university or a coop that invites folk like me in to learn the ropes- please fill me in!

    peace.
